YOLO vs Royal MCP
The closest of the bunch: two turnkey MCP plugins for managing WordPress with AI. The difference is the safety model — Royal MCP logs what happened; YOLO lets you undo it.
The short version
Royal MCP is a strong, generous tool: a free WordPress plugin with a big library of built-in operations, OAuth, per-tool permissions and an activity log, working with a long list of AI clients. YOLO overlaps with all of that but is built around a different promise — production safety. Where Royal MCP logs what happened and asks before sensitive actions, YOLO makes every change reversible: per-operation snapshots, full backups and restore, and automatic rollback when a change would break the site — plus owner-set Protect locks and conflict-safe collaboration. Royal MCP is excellent and free for AI-assisted content workflows; YOLO is for handing an AI the keys to a live site and sleeping at night.
At a glance
Both are turnkey MCP plugins — so this focuses on what happens when an AI actually changes your live site.
| Capability | YOLO | Royal MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Turnkey MCP plugin | Yes | Yes |
| Works with many AI clients | MCP + REST + OpenAPI + ChatGPT & shell | 10+ MCP / API clients |
| Scoped permissions | Scoped, read-only-capable tokens + opt-in gates | Per-tool allow / ask / block |
| Activity / audit log | Tamper-evident hash chain | Activity log / audit trail |
| Secrets withheld from the AI | Protected data not exposed by the API | Automatic credential redaction |
| Per-operation undo / snapshots | Every change snapshotted | No built-in undo (per its docs) |
| Safe plugin/theme updates | Snapshots first, then auto-reverts a bad update — one bulk action updates everything, each rolled back independently | No update rollback |
| Backups, restore & auto-rollback | Built-in + off-site + fatal-error revert | Not included |
| Owner guardrails (lock finished work) | Protect locks the AI can’t lift | Per-tool block (not content-level locks) |
| Conflict-safe multi-actor editing | Auto-merge + Conflicts review | None |
| Write code & install plugins (gated) | Opt-in, sandboxed, health-checked, self-healing | Content & site-management operations |
| Pricing | Commercial — one plugin, one licence | Free |
| Self-hosted, no SaaS | Your server | Your server |
| Knows your exact site | Live introspection — installed plugins, versions & config, secret-safe | No site-introspection tool |
| Plugin-grade extensions | Activate, deactivate & clean uninstall (no orphaned state) | No managed extension lifecycle |
| Page & theme building | Native blocks, full block themes, Elementor & Bricks — portable, no lock-in | Content tools; no builder-aware authoring |
| Reuse extensions across sites | Export / import & revocable share links, with one-click re-pull of updates | No equivalent |
| Reuse across sites | Share links & Kits — install a whole toolkit on another site, auto-updatable | None |
Two safety philosophies: ask-first vs always-reversible
Royal MCP prevents mistakes by asking for approval on sensitive actions and logging everything. That works well when you’re watching. YOLO adds the other half: assume something slips through anyway, and make it reversible — snapshots, undo, backups and automatic rollback. The more autonomously the AI works, the more that matters.
Undo is the headline difference
Royal MCP’s own documentation notes it has no built-in undo or rollback — the activity log lets you see what changed, but reversing it is manual. YOLO snapshots every operation, keeps restorable backups, and auto-reverts code or a plugin that would white-screen the site.
Beyond content operations
Both cover posts, pages, media, taxonomies, menus and settings. YOLO also lets an AI — when you opt in — write its own code extensions and install plugins, each sandboxed, health-checked and self-healing, and lets several people or AIs work the same live site at once without overwriting each other.
Use the AI you already have
Royal MCP supports a long list of AI platforms. YOLO is just as open — anything that speaks MCP or HTTP works, including a plain-ChatGPT token-prompt flow and shell agents — so neither locks you to one assistant.
Where Royal MCP shines
Royal MCP is a genuinely strong, free offering. It ships a large set of built-in operations — 67 core tools, and more when its companion plugins (WooCommerce, Elementor, ACF and others) are active — works with a long list of AI clients, supports OAuth and API-key auth, redacts credentials before data reaches the AI, gives you per-tool allow/ask/block control, and asks for approval before sensitive operations. If you want a free, capable way to drive WordPress content with AI and you’re comfortable being the safety net yourself, it’s an excellent choice.
